For more than one year now, I’ve been discovering a new medium: oil pastels. I think it’s a fantastic medium, you can have colors directly from your hands, with no other tools as water, medium or palette, such as with oil paint or gouache.

But, it’s maybe one of the most difficult medium as, at first, it can be difficult to convey the subtle and muted colors than we see in nature. In nature, colors are rarely saturated. With oils or gouache, I can mix easily the colors I see. With oil pastels, I need to learn how to layer and mix colors on paper. Of course, a large pastel palette is better to achieve the results I want.

I followed recently an online course from Lena Rivo who worked hard to get most of this medium and decided to share her knowledge with her students through this course
